Is the $549 Dyson Airwrap Worth It?

dyson airwrap review

Recently, Dyson released a $549 BLOW-DRYER/CURLER/VOLUMIZER COMBO and the beauty industry was blown away. The concept behind this product was great in my eyes; a gadget that can make me get rid of all my other hair gadgets and be a go to for my DAILY ROUTINE but also my party looks. As a CURLY-HAIRED GIRL I am always looking for faster ways to do my hair and was hoping this is the solution. I kept my eye on this product for some time and saw many youtubers reviewing it but none of their reviews were answering all my questions so I waited…

Well to my surprise, for Valentine’s day, my husband ordered me the Dyson Airwrap Complete set! My husband knew part of me really wanted to try this but I just couldn’t justify the price so he took the plunge for me. I had very high expectations of the product because I love Dyson’s vacuums, so how could this let me down… well was I WRONG!

First thing, the case this came in was HUGE! If you don’t have at least 2 feet of open counter or vanity space, which most people don’t, then you have nowhere to keep this set. It comes in a very nice leather case but that case takes up a lot of space and if you take it all out of the case then you risk misplacing one of the many attachments it comes with. The case is conceptually great for travel but its big and bulky size also makes it difficult to travel with.

Looking beyond the case, I thought to myself if this thing works well then I will make room for it! I read the instructions which, as I had seen in other reviews, mentioned that this gadget is designed for wet hair. Not soaking wet necessarily but damp hair at a minimum is recommended for best results. I typically wash my hair prior to making dinner so I thought that would be the best approach for this as well; I would wash my hair, get dinner ready, eat dinner and then go to town on my hair. I naturally have curly hair which takes hours to dry so this made sense for my hair type.

dyson volumizer

I started with the volumizer and smooth dryer attachment since it seemed to be the simplest. There are 2 smooth hair attachments so I opted for the “smoother” one of the two. I sectioned out my hair and went to town and within 30minutes my hair was dry, smooth, straight but frizzy. I decided to go back in with the smoother attachment instead of the volumizer but didn’t see much change. Eventually, I grabbed my straightening iron and flattened out the frizz for a clean sleek look. Blaming it on the fact that I have curly hair, I thought maybe the curling attachment would work better for me.

After watching some reviews on the curler I learned my hair should be about 75% dry, I need to blow dry my roots straight ahead of time, and I have to set the curls with cool air before turning the dryer off for each curl. After straightening my roots with the “smoother” brush, I began sectioning and curling my hair; this process took me over 45minutes, much longer than it typically takes me to curl my hair, and at the end my curls looked very tight but also dry and frizzy. I thought these look okay and lightly ran my hands through my curls to loosen them as I normally would. The results were workable, not my favorite but if the curls held then I could practice my technique. I had lunch plans that day so I went to grab lunch with a friend and by the time I came home, about 2 hours later, my curls had all fallen. I thought I should try again so I sprayed my ends with a bit of water and tried again, sadly only to get the same results a few hours later.

I continued to try the Dyson Airwrap and its many attachments after this because I was so driven on making it work for me but sadly it never seemed to match my expectations. I do still believe the concept and idea behind the gadget is great but there are some kinks to still be worked out. Maybe this is better for someone with naturally fine, and frizz free hair or maybe the reason we use straighteners and curling irons is because they simply work well for all hair types. I hope Dyson eventually corrects the versatility of this products and the 2nd generation is even better than the first; I’ll be waiting for the next one to come out but for now, this Dyson is headed back to the store.

Thank you reading my review of the dyson airwrap and leave me your comments/thoughts on it!
