Whipped Coffee (Indian Coffee)

whipped coffee

As I opened my social media this week, all I saw was people talking about WHIPPED COFFEE. I started looking into what whipped coffee or Dalgona’s TikTok coffee (as some were calling it) was and boy was I surprised. This wasn’t something new to the world, this was what most South Asians called INDIAN COFFEE or an INDIAN CAPPUCCINO! Looking back to when I was a kid, my mom and aunt would sit with me during homework time while passing a cup back and forth; inside this cup was the mix for their whipped coffee. They would take turns hand whipping this mix until it became RICH, CREAMY and FLUFFY and then sit down to enjoy it together. I would get to sneak a sip here and there but it was more caffeine than my 10 year-old self-needed but now I can have all the whipped coffee I want! Below is my FLAVORFUL but SIMPLIFIED RECIPE for the perfect whipped coffee, ENJOY!

PREP TIME: 10 minutes l COOK TIME: 0 minutes l TOTAL TIME: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee (pick one you like to drink normally)

    • if you only have brewed coffee, you can use that as well

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 3 cups milk

  • 1 cardamom pod

Directions

Makes: 2 whipped coffees

  1. Add the instant coffee, sugar and water to a mug or container that has some height. The mixture grows in height a bit and you want it getting all over as you whip.

    • If you only have brewed coffee on hand, make a very strong batch of coffee and reduce the coffee over the stove in a saucepan. Reduce the coffee down until most of the water has evaporated (the coffee should be very dark in color and almost bitter), take it off the stove and cool completely before and adding in the sugar.

  2. Start whipping the coffee mix until the coffee turns into a light caramel color; this will take about 5 minutes with a hand mixer or 15 minutes by hand whipping.

  3. FOR HOT COFFEE: In a saucepan, add in the milk with one smashed cardamom pod and bring to a steady simmer. Pull out the pod once the milk is to our preferred temperature, pour into a cup and then top with the whipped coffee mix.

FOR COLD COFFEE: Grind up the cardamom pod very finely and stir into the milk. Pour into a cup with a few cubes of ice and then top with the whipped coffee mix.

ENJOY HOT or COLD!

UPDATE: I have worked on a (real) sugar free version of this coffee which is keto-friendly. Scroll to the end of this post to see the updated version!
